Seal Cove

Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Willis Hurley announces his passing on Monday, December 9, 2024, from the Baie Verte Peninsula Health Centre, Baie Verte, NL, at the age of 83 years.

Willis was born in Westport, Newfoundland to Mary and Thomas Hurley on October 9, 1941.

Wes was older brother to eight brothers and sisters, all who were very special to him. He visited Seal Cove White Bay around the age of 20 where he met the love of his life, and were married on April 19, 1963. He remained there, building a house on land gifted from Leah's father. There they lived and had four sons, and like his father, he passed along his knowledge and skills that were taught to him by generations before.
Wes was known by any who met him for his great generosity and kindness. There are no better words to describe his love for others then the verse found in Hebrews 13:2 which says "Do not forget hospitality" and "kindness to strangers". To Wes there were no strangers. Everyone was welcome day or night, and Leah was always by his side to support him, providing a meal to any new friend he brought home that day. His greatest kindness was sharing with others what he had learned from the Bible and about Jehovah.

One of the things he had learned from Jehovah was that there was enjoyment to be found in hard work (Ecc 3:13). Whatever work he did providing for his family whether it be fishing, cutting wood, hunting, building his own home, or growing his own food, he took pleasure in the reward it gave his family. His hard work and life experiences always made great stories to tell others which was enjoyed by everyone when they had the opportunity to visit him.

Though enduring many hardships over the years he always remained faithful. He kept close to Jehovah remembering that the things he faced were for a short time. He knew his greatest reward was yet to come from Jehovah. His confidence in the promise made by Jehovah at 2 Peter 3:13 gave him the hope that even though he may pass, he will again have the opportunity to see all those so dear to him in a new earthy paradise to come.

Wes is predeceased by his mother Mary and father Thomas, sister Alice, and brother James.

He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 61 years Leah. As well as his four sons Derrick (Pauline), Brian (Dorothy), Peter (Lisa), Thomas (Wanda), and grand- children Alicia (Ryan), Lacey, Dylan, and great grand- child Van. Also left with fond memories are his siblings Beth (Alan) Jacobs, Boyde (Golda) Hurley, Wayne (Gloria) Hurley, Winnie (Ross) Jacobs, Terry (Evelyn) Hurley, Larry (Delphine) Hurley, brother-in-law Willis Davis and sister-in-law Charlotte Hurley. He will also be missed by a very large circle of extended family and friends.

Public visitation will take place at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, 22 Main Street, Baie Verte, NL, on Friday, December 13, 2024, from 3pm to 5pm and 6pm to 8pm

The funeral service will take place on Saturday, December 14, 2024, 2pm from Baie Verte Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Interment to follow at the Baie Verte  Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses cemetery.
