It is with great sadness that the family of the late Violet Carmel Traverse announces her passing on December 20, 2024, at the Western Long Term Care Home, Corner Brook, NL at the age of 84 years.

Violet leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her children, Larry Traverse (Paula), Kay Kennedy, Viola Hachey (John), Don Traverse (Louise), Karen Traverse (Gloria Green); grandchildren, Chris Traverse, Natasha Traverse (Matt Burton), Ryan Kennedy, Rick Lake (Regan), Megan Hart (Rob), Leslie Traverse, Maggie Traverse (Jake Barnes); great-grandchildren, Seth Traverse, Kashton Lake, Maddy Burton, Rylan Burton, Violet Traverse-Burton; siblings, Rita Quinlan, Faustina Philpott, Florence Taylor (Doug Tones), Linda Dube (John), Sam Philpott (Joyce Davis), Ann Walsh (Ron), Eddie Philpott (Stella Sacrey), Ray Philpott. Also a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Violet is predeceased by her husband Leslie Traverse; parents, Lawrence and Mary Philpott; grandson, Bradley Kennedy; son-in-law, Demps Kennedy; sisters, Bernice Forsythe (Frank), Catherine Downey (Cyril), Rose Downey (Jack); brothers in-law, Francis Quinlan, Jay Taylor and Robert Cohen; sister in-law, Lucy Philpott. As well as all in-laws and spouses on the Traverse side.

Violet was born in Coachman's Cove on August 22nd, 1940, to Lawrence and Mary Philpott. At the age of 20 she met and married the love of her life Leslie Traverse and together they built a home and raised five children. Once the children were old enough and in school, she went out on the water to fish beside her husband to provide for the family.

Violet was one of three women in the province who fought to have the law changed so that women who fish with their husbands could also be EI eligible. She was very active on the council and was involved with a lot of volunteer work on several committees. She also loved a good game of broomball, darts and cards. Besides fishing she tended their vegetable gardens during the growing season. She loved going moose hunting and sealing. She also spent a lot of time helping cut firewood, ice fishing and trouting. She was a fierce lioness when it came to her children, very protective and very consistent in her discipline. She was a very independent woman, and a woman of great faith. She left an imprint on the hearts of all who knew her.

The rosary service will take place from Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, Coachman's Cove, NL, Thursday, December 26, 2024 at 7:00pm followed by a wake service.

The Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, December 27, 2024 at 11:00 am from Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, Coachman's Cove, NL. Interment will follow from Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Cemetery, Coachman's Cove, NL.
