It is with sadness that the family of the late Violet Catherine Matthews announces her passing at the Lionel Kelland Hospice in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL.
Violet leaves to mourn with loving memories her children, Lorraine MacNeil (Joseph), Brent's Cove, Cynthia Matthews (Danny), Grande Prairie, AB, Marcella Matthews Sullivan (Patrick), Edmonton, AB, & Cordelia Gallant (Michael), Hantsport, NS; grandchildren, Patricia MacNeil, Margaret MacNeil (Tony Kyritsis), Daniel MacNeil (Kayla Simms), Joanne MacNeil (Jonathon Butt), Thomasina Bosch (Trevor Bosch), Leslie Critch (Mark Howe), Zachary Sullivan (Maya Radecki), Patrick Sullivan, Eleanor Gallant (Avery Grouette), & Grace Gallant; great-grandchildren, Brynn Bosch, Thomas Sullivan, & Matthew Sullivan; step-grandchild, Brooke Budgell; siblings: Phil Conway (Bob Joseph); special sister-in-law, Rose Matthews (Ignatius); siblings-in-law, Linda Loder (Terry), Madeline Haas, Kathleen Matthews, & Stella Villalta; nieces and nephews, Curt Conway, John Matthews (Tonya), Glen Matthews (Chantal), & Amy Payne (Gerard); special friend, Peter Shea ( Fleur-dys-Lys)
Violet is predeceased by her husband of 34 years, Thomas Patrick Matthews; parents, Daniel and Marcella (Hartery) Lacey; parents-in-law, Patrick and Cecilia (O'Connell) Matthews; siblings-in-law, special brother-in-law, Ignatius Matthews (and his son Corey), Alphonses Matthews, Walter Matthews (Shirley), Claudio Villalta, James Haas (and his son Robert); sisters-in-law, Dorothy Holling, Marie Matthews, & Bernice Corbett (Edward, and their son Ronnie).
Violet was born to Daniel and Marcella Lacey, of Brent's Cove on December 17, 1939 in St Anthony, NL.
In 1958, she married Thomas Patrick Matthews of Brent's Cove, where they raised their four girls and her special brother-in-law, Ignatius, who came to be part of her family.
Violet had a variety of careers in lifetime, including fish plant worker, Teacher Assistant, and in home care. She was actively involved in her church, the Altar Society, as a Eucharistic minister, and brought the Holy Eucharist to the sick and shut-ins of the Parish.
Violet enjoyed knitting and sewing, which she always shared with family and friends. She was a guiding light in all our lives. A nurturing, prayerful woman, Violet was always involved in the lives of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be forever loved and missed by all who knew her.
The public visitation will take place Saturday, January 4, 2025 at 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM from the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church, Harbour Round, NL.
The Rosary and Wake Service will take place on Thursday, July 10, 2025 from St. John the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, Brent's Cove, NL at 7:00 PM
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, July 11, 2025 from St. John the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, Brent's Cove, NL at 2:00 PM
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, 22 Main Street, Baie Verte, NL.
