Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our precious husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather on February 12, 2023, at the age of 92 years.

Merrill Ronald Reid was born on October 6, 1930, to Bob and Emma Reid of Buchans, NL.

Left to mourn are his loving wife, Phyllis and seven children, Judy, Merrill, Bonnie, Gail, Robin, Sheila and Chris and their families.

He is predeceased by his loving daughter, Peggy; son, Dan; parents, Robert & Emma Reid; siblings, Bill & Molly.

He began his marriage to Phyllis Lillie Locke of Buchans in 1955 and they were married for 67 years. They had nine children, 19 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

He loved to hunt and fish for his family, garden and to tell stories.

During his life, as a young lad he loved to run, and he represented Buchans, NL at the Tely 10 in 1946. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of 20. He served on the HMCS Cayuga from 1950 to 1953 as the Quartermaster during the Korean War. After returning from the war, he embarked on a career in mining. He worked in Buchans, NL and Balmertown, ON in underground mines mostly as a Timberman. In 1992, he and Phyllis began their long and wonderful retirement in Buchans, NL. He spent many a day at his precious cabin, gardening and creating swimming holes and other fun activities for his many grandchildren.

The public visitation will take place at the United Church in Buchans, NL on Thursday, February 16, 2023 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

The funeral will take place Friday, February 17, 2023 at 2:00 pm from the United Church, Buchans, NL.

As expressions of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Church Memorial Fund, Buchans, NL.  The interment will follow at Buchans Community Cemetery, Buchans, NL.

We, the family would like to thank the staff at AM Guy Memorial Hospital Buchans, NL  and Central Health Regional Health Centre Grand Falls-Windsor, NL.  The family would also like to extend a special thank you to his home care worker and good friend, Lois Thornhill.
