It is with great sadness that the family of the late Henry Joseph Young announces his passing at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre, Grand Falls-Windsor, NL aged 94 years.

Henry leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his wife, Patricia; sons, Mike (Lynn), Chris (Lynn); grandchildren, Mark (Renee), Stephanie (Adam), Jonathan (Marissa), Grant (Claire), Katie, Emily (Dan), Philip (Elizabeth), Alexandra, Katelyn; great-grandchildren, Maggie, Henry, Harper, Heidi, Josh, Thomas, Ryker, Benjamin, Leo; sister-in-in law, Doris Duder; and niece and nephew Melanie and Jeff; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Henry is predeceased by his parents, Peter & Rebecca Young; sons, David, John; and a large number or brothers & sisters.

Henry Joseph Young was born in Chance Port on October 12, 1931. At the age of one he moved to Windsor, living on what is now Caribou Road and Young Street but was then unincorporated wilderness. Henry grew up during a time that most of us can no longer imagine. People lived with nature, worked with their hands, and relied on each other for survival.

Never one to sit still, Henry enrolled for military service in the years following World War 2 and was deployed to Europe. Prior to setting sail from Halifax, Henry ate spaghetti for the very first time, beginning a lifelong love of trying any food put in front of him. His sense of adventure and curiosity eventually brought him to London while on leave from the military. He may have been travelling the world, but on this day Henry found his home. He describes it as destined and fateful – from the moment they met, he knew he would be spending the rest of his life with Patricia.

Henry left Newfoundland as a bold teenager, and returned as a husband and father. He briefly worked with Hudson Bay and the Royal Stores, but spent most of his working years as a carpet layer, carrying on his love of working with his hands and helping those around him. He finished his career as a handyman with The Mount Peyton Hotel.

Community-minded and at home in nature, Henry was proud of who he was and where he was from. Of course these are values that would be inherited by his own family, but as a founding member of the Qalipu First Nation, he was instrumental in securing an identity for tens of thousands of Newfoundlanders under the band, providing a way for people to stay connected with a way of life that he proudly lived – one that brings us all closer to nature and each other.

Always social, Henry stayed connected wherever possible. He was a member of the Exploits 50+ Club, Royal Canadian Legion, and Salvation Army Men's Service Club, among others, and would attend any and every social event he could, always with a smile that could only come from someone with his love of people and life. In retirement, Henry was a hunter, camper, woodworker, and exceptional bowler who took great pride in winning against people of all ages.

Henry once said that ageing doesn't really change what you do, it just starts to take longer to do the things that once came easily. As life goes on, Henry is never really far from any of us. We may have to look a little harder to see him, but he is forever present in the love, warmth, and smiles of those lucky enough to have known him.

The public visitation will take place Wednesday, May 6, 2026 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, 10 Bayley Street, Grand Falls-Windsor, NL.

The funeral service will take place Thursday, May 7, 2026 at 1 pm at The Salvation Army Park Street Citadel, 27 Park Street, Grand Falls-Windsor, NL.

The interment will take place at a later date.
