Harvey
Burton
Jul 30, 1934 — Aug 27, 2024
Springdale
It is with broken hearts that we announce that Harvey Clayton Burton, aged 90, passed peacefully away at the Valley Vista Seniors Home on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.
Harvey understood that his time on earth would end and was at peace with his eventual departure when his time was up. When he passed, we hope he felt the same peace knowing he lived a life to be proud of.
Harvey was born on the Horse Islands in July 1934. He moved to La Scie in 1968 where he worked in the fish plant for several years before becoming a fisherman. He retired from the fishery in 1992 and was blessed with good health for most of his retirement. Harvey was a Christian man who didn't have to tell you what he believed because he showed you with his actions. He went out of his way to be kind and generous to everyone. It didn't matter to Harvey if you went to church on Sunday or if you were at the bar Saturday night, he greeted everyone with the same bright smile and booming voice out of the joy of being around others. For decades, he was active in the church, and he loved to play the accordion during services. He found peace in nature and loved berry picking in the summer and cutting wood in the winter.
Until the last few years, Harvey was strong and more spry than most. There are many stories of how he could jump the distance between wharves on the Horse Islands or leap up on an oil drum without breaking a sweat. His hugs were stronger than anything, yet gentle and full of love. He will always be remembered for his faith, the love he had for his family, and his beautiful smile.
Harvey was predeceased by his parents, Pearce and Edna Burton; parents-in-law Daniel and Blanche Newman; infant son, Maurice Burton; brother, Pastor William Burton; siblings-in-law, Pastor Dale Vaters; Hope Burton, John Newman, Tom Newman, and nephew, Peter Vaters.
Left behind with loving memories are his wife, Marie (Newman) Burton; sons, Ivor (Iris), Owen (Clotilda), Collin (Kim) and Earl (Tanya); daughter, Karen Compton (Jerome); grandchildren; Michael (Elizabeth), Lynn (Greg), Tyler, and Max.
great-grandchildren, Nikita, Rosalie, Daniel, and Harvey; sisters, Ruby Robinson (Neville), Evelyn Norman (Edgar), Bonnie Saunders (Gord), and Barbara Vaters; Brothers, Clarence Burton (Ruth), Herbert Burton, Larry Burton and Garry Burton (Edna); siblings-in-law; Ray Newman (Sandra), Kevin Newman (Bonnie), Keith Newman (Sheena) and Linda Newman; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
There is no public visitation but all who knew and loved him are encouraged to share a fond memory of Harvey or pay forward an act of kindness in their community.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, Baie Verte, NL.
