It is with great sadness that the family of the late Greta Jacobs announces her passing on April 28, 2025 at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Care Centre, Grand Falls-Windsor, NL, at the age of 84 years.
Greta Bussey Canning Jacobs was born on March 6, 1941 at St. Lunaire, Newfoundland, the fifth of eleven children. At age 11 she accepted the Lord into her life at a young people's meeting in the Salvation Army, Griquet and was enrolled as a Junior Soldier, then when she was 15 years old as a Senior Soldier. In 1958, at age 17, Greta found work as a teacher and left home to travel by Steamer to Norris Arm where she taught all grades in a One Room Schoolhouse. After two years there, she went on to teach at Birchy Bay for one year, during which she met the love of her life, Levi Canning. Together they raised five children; Marion, Lorna, Vincent, Jack, and Karen. During this time Greta worked at Gid Sacrey Ltd. for 20 years. Then they enjoyed their 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Greta was predeceased by her husband, Levi in December 2018.
In 2021 she married her beloved husband, Havelock Jacobs. She spent her final years with him at the Baie Verte Retirement Home, where she enjoyed time with old and new friends, especially her best friend Maisie Welshman.
She loved gardening, berry picking, knitting and crocheting, mostly socks and slippers, for family and friends. She loved to sing hymns and played the button accordion, drum, and tambourine in praise of the Lord.
Left with fond and loving memories, her husband Havelock; children - Marion Canning, Lorna Saunders (Carl), Kevin Vincent Canning, Jack Canning, Karen Reber (Randy); grandchildren - Kevin Saunders, Paula Sievert, Michelle Saunders, Jackie Wild, Christopher Canning, Marie Canning, Brianna Reber; great-grandchildren - Erik Stevens, Todd Cahill, Reign Wild, Levi Wild.
The public visitation will take place Sunday, May 4, 2025, from 2-4 & 6-8 from The Salvation Army Citadel, Woodstock, NL.
The funeral service will take place Monday May 5, 2025 at 2:00 PM from The Salvation Army Citadel, Woodstock, NL.
As expressions of sympathy & in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Salvation Army Citadel, P. O Box 17, Woodstock, NL, A0K 5X0
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, 22 Main Street, Baie Verte, NL.
