It is with great sadness that the family of the late Fred Joseph Saunders announces his passing at the Dr. Hugh Twomey Centre, Botwood, NL aged 85 years.

Fred was born on December 2, 1936 to Samuel & Elizabeth Saunders. At the age of around 12-14, Fred would skip school to go in the woods to rind wood. He worked his entire working years as a logger/wood cutter. He met and married the love of his life Tephi King on January 25, 1963. In his words "I got a good woman". They were blessed with 4 children whom Fred worked hard and provided for. Later they were blessed with 9 grandchildren & 12 great grandchildren. Fred in later years spent many hours working on word search puzzles to pass time and loved it when someone dropped by to visit and have a chat. He also looked forward to his daily rides especially after he couldn't drive himself. He was an awesome storyteller of days gone by. Family gatherings were a highlight at their home. It didn't matter who you were, you were welcome. Fred/pop will always be remembered & missed. Right up until nans passing 5 months ago, he could still peel the potatoes & cut the salt beef for each family meal. And we all know salt beef & potatoes were two of the things pop enjoyed to the fullest.

Fred leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his children, Alonzo Saunders (Gayla), Wavey Mills (Chris), and Karen Norman (Eldon); son-in-law, Derek Mitchell; grandchildren, Hayley (Cody), Marcus (Kristin), Jenna (Shawn), Vanessa, Ashley, Melanie (Nathaniel), Kaylee (Justin), Alisha (Brandon) and Dawson; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Calvin (Phyllis) Saunders, siblings-in-law, Jessie Perry, Willis Young (Audrey), Sophie Burriage; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Fred was predeceased by his wife, Tephi Saunders; daughter, Ferne Mitchell; parents, Samuel & Elizabeth Saunders; parents-in-law, George & Lucy King; siblings, infants George & Nelson Saunders, Lindberg Saunders, Selby Saunders (Maude), Phyllis Young; siblings-in-law, Edna King (Warrick), Daisy Dwyer (Micheal), Evelyn Newbury (Francis), Nellie Green (Edward), William King (Pauline), Alonzo Perry (Eliza), James Perry, Harrison Burriage & Ernest Perry.

Public visitation took place from Faith Pentecostal Church, Burlington, NL on Saturday, October 15, 2022 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm.

The funeral service took on Sunday, October 16 2022 at 2 pm from Faith Pentecostal Church, Burlington, NL with Pastor Craig Lane officiating.

As expressions of sympathy, flowers are graciously accepted or donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Society.
