Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Edna Rosalind Penney (Prouse) announces her passing from the Springdale Green Bay Health Centre on Monday, June 1, 2026, at the age of 80.

Edna was born on June 17th, 1945, To James and Daisy Prouse at Middle Arm, NL. Edna was the oldest of 5 children, often being a mother figure to her more younger siblings when needed.
At the age of 18 Edna married the love of her life, Cecil Penney of Smith's Harbour on September 4th, 1963. Together they had 11 children and also raised their first-born grandson and made a beautiful life together.
While Cecil worked away for long periods of time, Edna took on the fatherly role as well. She never shied away from hard work, whether it be bringing water from the nearby well, chopping firewood, tending the wood stove, cooking endless meals and countless batches of homemade bread, Edna done it all whilst keeping 12 youngsters in line, pretty impressive indeed.
When Cecil returned to the water to make a living, Edna was right there by his side. From picking cod from the nets, picking capelin or keeping everyone fed in punch bowl Labrador with a broken arm with NO CAST, she was up to the challenge.
Edna took pride in her family and providing whatever they needed and done so with her whole heart.
Later in life when the grandchildren and later still great grandchildren came along, Edna's heart grew a size for each and every one of them She delighted in the phone calls, was overjoyed by their visits. "Grammie" as she was to them made the best cinnamon rolls and bread. She filled their bellies and they filled her heart.
In 2010 Edna lost the love of her life, whom she shared 46 wonderful years with. Though hard to continue life's journey without her life's companion, Edna faced it headed on and ventured into life again just as Cecil would have wanted. Edna made many journeys across the country visiting family and enjoying many adventures along the way, even a jump or two on the trampoline, lol.
Four years ago, Edna was diagnosed with breast cancer. Following a double mastectomy, 5 strokes, covid, partial paralysis, 2 days in palliative care, Edna persevered and proved medical expects wrong and surpassed the 3-month life expectancy by 3 years and 9 months. Her resilience and strength were insurmountable.
In her 80 years - 11 months - 15 days on this earth she gave so much love, guidance and knowledge to anyone and everyone who had the privilege to know her.
Edna leaves behind a legacy like no other. One that will have a lasting impact for generations to come.
