It is with great sadness and broken hearts that the family of David G. Murphy of Grand Falls-Windsor announce his passing at Lionel Kelland Hospice on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the age of 86 years.

Leaving to mourn with precious memories are: Betty, his wife of 62 years, daughters: Maria and Louise; son: David J. (DJ); and two grandchildren: Jessica and Ebony Palmer, both from Ontario.

David was predeceased by parents: Thomas & Hazel (Abbott) Murphy; siblings: Mary (Phillip) Barry, Elizabeth Murphy, Elaine Lynch, infant siblings Shirley and Robert; brother-in-law Morris Mercer; as well as his parents in law: Mary and Michael Keough.

David is also survived by his brothers: James (Cathy), Frank (Sheila), Thomas (Juanita), and Paul (Lisa); his sisters: Jean (Winston) Butt, Yvonne Murphy, Sarah (David) Howse, Marion (Vince) Benson, Edith (Terry) Wilson, Verna Mercer, Dianne (Glenn) Brown, and Laurie Ann Murphy; as well as his brother-in-law: Brendan Lynch.

Dave was a model citizen and a truly good man whose life was defined by hard work, integrity, honesty, and a deep love for his family and community. For more than 62 years, Dave proudly served the people of Grand Falls-Windsor, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered by generations.

Beginning his career in 1958, Dave dedicated himself to his trade and to the people who walked through the doors of his well-known shop. For decades, Dave's Barber Shop and Hairstyling was a familiar and much loved fixture in Grand Falls-Windsor and throughout the Central Region. His customers became friends, and his shop was more than a place to get a haircut - it was a place where people could visit, share a story, have a laugh, and simply enjoy Dave's company. His commitment to his work and to his customers continued until his retirement in 2020 at the age of 81.

Away from his shop, Dave found some of his greatest enjoyment in the outdoors. He loved spending time in the woods, hunting and fishing, and especially enjoyed his time at the cabin at Gaff Topsails. Whether moose or partridge hunting, Dave cherished the time spent outdoors, surrounded by the beauty and peacefulness of Newfoundland. These were special times for Dave, shared with family and friends and filled with many memories that will be treasured.

Dave also shared a special bond with his beloved dog, Murph, who was his faithful companion for 16 years. Their daily walks together brought Dave great enjoyment and companionship, especially during the quieter days of his retirement. Murph was a cherished part of Dave's life and brought him many happy moments over the years.

Dave's life was built on the values he held dear: showing up, working hard, treating people honestly and fairly, and always being willing to lend a hand or share a conversation. His more than six decades of service to Grand Falls-Windsor were not simply years spent at work - they were years spent becoming part of the fabric of the community that he called home.

He will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, hardworking businessman, loyal friend, and a man who found great joy in the outdoors. Above all, Dave was a good man who made a lasting difference in the lives of those around him. His presence will be deeply missed, but the love, memories, and legacy he leaves with his family, friends, and community will remain for years to come.  Dave was a  hardworking, independent man who loved classic westerns like The Proud Rebel .  He shared the main character's sense of honour and strength – he never backed down from a challenge, he provided well for his family, and had a sharp wit that made us laugh even during his final days in hospice.

The visitation will take place Thursday, August 27, 2026 from 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, 10 Bayley Street, Grand Falls-Windsor, NL.

The Mass of Christian Burial will take place August 28, 2026 at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph's Parish, 5 Station Road, Grand Falls-Windsor, NL.

Interment will take place at a later date.
