Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Andrea Cavell (Pretty) Gillard announces her passing. Andrea passed peacefully away at the Baie Verte Peninsula Health Centre, Baie Verte, NL on Tuesday, September 21st, 2021 at the age of 81 years.

Andrea was a devoted teacher for many years in Corner Brook, Buchans and Baie Verte. Through her soft spoken, kind and personable manner she influenced so many lives and made many friends. Her love of teaching was only surpassed by her love of quilting when teaching became no longer an option. Most of her quilts were either gifted to family and friends or donated to the Baie Verte Hospital Auxiliary and used for major fundraising efforts, especially at Christmas time. The joy she got from making baby quilts shone through in her work.

Andrea was the best wife, sister, aunt, and friend one could possibly want. She was compassionate, outgoing, kind and appreciative; she valued her family and friends and always looked forward to going to dinner at Barb's and Leo's. The conversation and food were superb and a real treat.

Andrea's family wishes to thank the staff at the White Bay Retirement Living Home, where she lived for the past year. Your kindness and care were greatly appreciated! Thank you to all her new friends there, you helped make it truly home. A special thank you to Baie Verte Hospital staff, especially the Acute Care Unit. You were so compassionate and caring during Andrea's last days. A very special thank you to her sister, Golda, who was always there for her. You were her main support, and we appreciate all the time you sacrificed to help her through the many health challenges she had over the years.

Andrea is predeceased by her parents - Edmund and Lucy (Gates) Pretty; brother - Rexford; parents-in-law - Percy and Irene Gillard; brother-in-law - Pat Dowdall.

Left to mourn and celebrate her life are her husband of 58 years, Gerald Gillard; sisters - Melva Dowdall, Georgetown, ON; Beryl Stevenson, Milton, ON and Golda Byrne (Jim), Reidville NL; brother-in-law - Carl Gillard (Patricia), Springdale, NL as well as many nieces, nephews, friends, and special friends in Baie Verte - Barb and Leo Kennedy, Peg and Walt Goosney, Mildred Budgell, Vera Boyle and Cathy and Mick Alyward.

As per Andrea's wish cremation has taken place and a celebration of her life will be held in Baie Verte when possible. Interment will be in Buchans at a date to be determined.

As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Andrea's memory to Buchans Community Cemetery, Buchans, NL A0H 1G0 or e-transfer to the Cemetery Committee Chair, at loisthornhill@yahoo.ca, or to a charity of one's choice.

"God didn't promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow or sun without rain. But God did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears, and a light for the way. And for all who believe in His Kingdom above, He answers their faith with everlasting love."

Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to Foster Funeral Home, 22 Main Street, Baie Verte, NL.
